1st—2nd Grade Curriculum

The primary focus of first/second grade is building the foundation for learning with an emphasis on language arts and math skills. Manipulative and visual learning are incorporated into a Christian based curriculum.
Religion Focuses on basic Bible stories with real life applications. Weekly memory verses reinforce God’s Word.
Reading Six different books (BJU) are used to attack basic phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. We use two books (BJU) to further build upon phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension skills that have already been taught. Novels are used to broaden the reading opportunities for second graders.
Phonics & English Promotes a comprehension-centered goal for word recognition with an emphasis on phonics. Teacher models the writing process and the student composes written phrases and sentences in his own words.
Writing and Grammar Uses the writing process to teach different types of compositions. Develops the correct use of English grammar in written and oral communication. Develops study and reference skills.
Handwriting Students develop the skills necessary to express themselves in writing. Students will write PreCursive alphabet and numbers, develop good posture, and write neatly and legibly.
Math A manipulative-bases concept approach. Activities are used to build number sense (such as counting skills), estimation, and problem solving. Social Studies The focus if on old and new communities and early American History.
Science There are seven major topics: Living Things, Human Body, Earth, Space, Matter, Energy, and Motion using a textbook and consumable notebook.
Art, Music, & P.E. These areas of learning promote the child’s awareness of cultural and aesthetic value in the fine arts, as well as development of fine and gross motor skills.
